2 Euro "450th anniversary of the death of Tiziano", The centre depicts the Allegory of Wisdom, a detail from Titian's painting, preserved at the Marciana National Library in Venice. The coin is completed by the inscriptions TIZIANO and SAN MARINO on the left, the letter R, identifying the Mint of Rome, on the right, and the initials of the author Silvia Ciucci, SC, at the bottom centre, and the dates 1576 and 2026 on the right. The twelve stars of the European Union are depicted around the edge. Born in Pieve di Cadore, Titian trained in the workshop of Gentile and Giovanni Bellini and, together with Giorgione, played a leading role in the development of tonalism, an artistic tradition typical to the Venetian school based on a novel concept of color as well as a painting technique built upon overlapping glazes and gradual tone-on-tone transitions. Among his most significant works is the “Allegoria della Sapienza,” created in 1560 specifically for the ceiling of the vestibule of the Marciana National Library in Venice—a veritable center of knowledge and humanistic culture—set within a dramatic trompe-l’?il perspective that creates the illusion of a loggia with columns and balustrades, thereby amplifying the symbolic dimension of knowledge.
